About the time my son turned 5 he became interested in “drawing” realistic pictures, etc. So I would provide some themed paper shapes and get him started on a mural. I’d leave it up and he’d add to it over a 3 days to a week. It still is a popular activity.

They very much like to explore…and they CAN think logically about most things…so I was more willing to provide my son with a whole “palette” of paint colors, paint tools, etc and let him explore on his own. We turned them into mobiles, used them for scissor practice, collages, cards, etc.

This age still loves sensory—shaving cream play…making and playing with playdough…water and rocks, etc.

I know those aren’t “easter” ideas and not necessarily crafts but maybe it will help trigger ideas for your child. Have you asked him what he would be interested in doing? The local library will have craft books he can browse through, computer games he can check out, etc.

As the mommy to a four-year-old with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), I’ve discovered many fine mainstream toys the present are both fun and therapeutic. Toys that improve language development, sensory and motor regulation, craft core strength, muscle tone and coordination. Here are five of my favorite toys, from $18 – $300. Most of them are eco-friendly, which I personally love. I’m not speaking as a medical expert here, just as a mom. If you’re the parent, relative or friend of an autistic child, maybe this list will make your holiday shopping a little bit easier. I hope so!

Wheely Bug – If you haven’t seen these cute little ride-on critters, you need to check them out. I bought the cow for my boys last month and my ASD son loves it! (Also available in bee and ladybug!) It really helps him with coordination and balance, while building his core. We he first started riding it, he was wobbly. Now he can lift his feet and maneuver it around every corner. It has helped him adjust to motion that had bothered him in the past. In my opinion, this is one of the best gifts for an ASD child. Obviously this is not great for hills or steep surfaces, but on flat streets, in the driveway or at the park, it’s a wonderful (and fun) toy. Our OT therapist has mentioned it multiple times. Haba Ball Track Master Builder Set – Many autistic children love toys that spin and roll. My son does a variety of activities at OT therapy involving marbles, which is why I love this toy from Haba. Time to choose your children to summer camp!

In Canada many children attend summer camp during the long vacation summer. Each Canadian province has summer camps and there are literally hundreds to choose from and they are very popular. In fact, they are so people are already complete before the year begins, so it is best to do a lot to find the camp you want to go to make sure you book your place in time, so start now!

Children of all ages can participate in summer camps Some are simply day events while others may be a week or a month or more. Each offers different activities so you should be able to find one that suits your interests. There are groups for boys, or just for girls, but many are mixed. There are also camps for special needs, so that no one should miss the opportunity. You must pay for the camps so you will need to Research your parents to ensure they can afford the ones you choose!

How to choose a summer camp

Sit down with your parents and write a list of things you want to camp, be fun stuff, learning skills, your hobbies, etc. Your parents should also write a list of what they want you to get from the camp. This may be different from yours, but you will probably see that the things you want and the things your parents want is more of a camp. For example, you may want to learn the board Roller and your parents want you to gain more confidence. By choosing the right camp, there is no reason why these two things can not be achieved same time.

Once you've decided what you and your parents want to camp, you must decide what type of camp you want to attend.

Location: While you may be limited by location, some camps do not offer transportation, so consider this if the distance could be a problem for you.

Facilities: Your parents might be more concerned about the facilities that you but you need to know what you expect things to camp. What is security like, what medical facilities are there, what are the qualifications supervisors of the camp, this type of bedding are there, the camp can meet special needs if necessary. What type of accommodation is provided or cabins, tents etc?

Some camps are run by religious organizations, so if this is important to ensure that you are able to practice your religion, at camp.

Size: Camps vary in size from several dozen people to over 500. Want to be part of a large camp or prefer a smaller environment camp? Even the largest camps tend to divide the children into small groups so that you always get the support individually, you would receive at a smaller camp.

Cost: Of course, the cost can be a major problem, especially if you want to attend several camps or have siblings who also need to attend the camp. This may mean that your parents are

spend a lot of money so you must be aware of this and not be too selfish in your needs, after all there will still be next year to try something different.

You should also be aware of what is included in cost such as equipment, travel, transportation, as these can add significantly to the overall cost if not included.

Costs vary greatly from camp from about $ 200 for day camp to several thousand dollars a month long camp. Fortunately, there are many choices so I hope you'll find one in your parents' budget.

Duration: Camps can last from hours to several weeks. You and your Parents need to be sure that you are ready to be away from home for the duration of your trip. Some children like to be away from home and enjoy the freedom, but others may get very nostalgic and want to return home after a day or two.

Check to see if there is an option available to reduce the duration of the genre if you find you want to go home early. Is there a refund policy in this case?

Activities: This is the most important decision insofar as children are concerned, because that is what you will do immediately to camp. Some camps specialize in certain areas such as horse riding, climbing, sports, crafts etc., while others offer a wide variety activities.

Want to take part in team sports or more unusual activities such as tennis? Want entire camp to revolve around water sports or you prefer something quieter, like crafts or arts? Do you need to learn a particular skill from scratch or are you better off? Check the skill level of each camp to ensure that meets your needs skills.

• How long has it been in operation?
• What are the goals of the camp?
• How many employees are in service how many children?
• What are the qualifications of the staff?

• What toilet and shower are available?
• What Facilities are available for contact with the house (telephone, mail, etc.)?
• What provisions are there for bad weather?
• What insurance cover is there?
• What are the items that your child can take with them?

• Can respond camp special needs requirements: food, accessibility supervision?

• What arrangements do they have for medical emergencies?

Camp Activities

As mentioned there are many camps offer many different activities, They include the following examples, although there are many more.

Team Sports: Hockey, basketball, baseball, martial arts, football, volleyball, etc.

Individual sports: golf, cycling, skateboarding, archery, karting, track and field, horse riding etc.

Water sports: canoeing, diving, windsurfing, jet skiing, swimming, sailing, kayaking, water skiing, rafting etc.

Adventure: climbing, orienteering, climbing, dog sledding, hiking, bungee jumping, hiking, biking, driving, wilderness camps etc.

Performing Arts: Acting, writing, costumes, dance, music, circus, makeup etc.

Creative Arts: Drawing, crafts, painting, photography, cooking, stained glass, sculpture, carpentry, sewing, ceramics, etc.

Academics: reading, languages, journalism, computer science, etc.

Other: This could be any number of activities such as gardening, archeology, astronomy, agriculture, geology, biology marine etc.

Basically, if you can think of a topic, you will have more chance of finding a camp to fit.

Overseas Camps

Although most children choose to participate in camps in Canada there are options to choose camps abroad or in America North. There may be age restrictions for this type of camp, but you might find yourself in China, Mexico, the United States or in any other place in the world. Obviously, the cost of these camps are much higher than the Canadian camps so it must be considered when choosing a camp abroad.

Special Needs

Just because you have a specific need does not mean you should miss all the fun. There many camps that can accommodate children with special needs and much more specialized in such needs. It does not matter if you have a chronic illness, a disability or other physical or mental limitations, there will be a camp suitable for you.

Some camps specialize in providing activities for the deaf, blind and wheelchair bound children. They still offer all major activities such as canoeing, swimming, gymnastics, performing arts etc. They offer also being trained staff and 24 hour medical facilities and specialized equipment.

Some other specialized camps to help people with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, so there's really no need to feel left out no matter what your needs and requirements.

They are held in large rooms and many different organizers to attend the camp so you can visit your parents to see what could be the best for you. Summer camps are a great way to escape and experience exciting new business or expand on those you already love. They also give you a chance to do things without your parents being around (parents also escape from you!)
